The Core Difference: 48V Mild-Hybrid

The most significant technical difference between the B48 and B42 is the addition of BMW's 48V mild-hybrid system (MHEV) in the B42. The B42 integrates a 48V ISG (Integrated Starter-Generator) that replaces the traditional 12V alternator and starter motor.

The ISG provides:

Electric torque-fill — Smooth power delivery during gear changes by filling the torque gap
Coasting mode — Engine can be switched off while coasting at speed for fuel efficiency
Enhanced auto-stop/start — Faster, smoother engine restarts
Regenerative braking — Energy recovery during deceleration
Electric boost assist — Small electric contribution during initial acceleration

Shared Architecture

Despite the 48V addition, the B42 shares its fundamental combustion architecture with the B48. Both engines use the same block design, bore/stroke dimensions (82mm × 94.6mm), twin-scroll turbocharger concept, VALVETRONIC variable valve lift, and Double-VANOS variable cam timing. Both use the Bosch MG1CS024 DME.

This shared architecture is why both engines respond so well to ECU calibration — the same fundamental tuning principles apply.

How to Identify Your Engine

Identification Methods

1. Model Year: Pre-LCI G20 (2019–2022) = B48. LCI G20 (2022+) = B42. The LCI transition date varies by market.

2. Engine Cover: The B42 engine cover may differ slightly from the B48, and the 48V ISG wiring harness is visible near the belt drive.

3. VIN Decoder: The production date in your VIN can help determine which engine variant was installed.

4. Bimmer Power Studio: The software automatically reads the engine code from the DME during ECU identification — the most reliable method.

Tuning Implications

Both engines are fully supported by Bimmer Power Studio with dedicated calibrations:

• The B48 calibration is a straightforward engine map optimisation — boost, timing, fuel, and torque maps are modified for increased output.

• The B42 calibration performs the same combustion engine optimisation but is additionally validated for 48V ISG compatibility. The mild-hybrid system must correctly coordinate with the increased engine output — our calibration ensures this integration is seamless.

The slight difference in remap gains (+40 whp for B48 vs +38 whp for B42) is due to the B42's revised turbocharger calibration and the 48V system's influence on the torque request path.

Which Engine is Better for Tuning?

Both engines are excellent tuning platforms. The B48 is slightly simpler to tune due to the absence of the 48V system. The B42 offers a marginally more refined driving experience thanks to the ISG's torque-fill function, which becomes even more noticeable after a remap when the higher torque output creates a more pronounced gap during gear changes.
